My letterboxes are scrunched!! I need a tip!

I notice that all my DVD rips using smartripper are in the 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio. This leaves all my letterbox DVD movies (gladiator or castaway for instance) with a final rip that looks scrunched. Is there a way to rip DVD's and preserve the original letterbox aspect ratio which is not 16:9? I'm big on fidelity and care nothing of filesize. I just want my DVD rips to look the same as they do when I play them with my DVD player and not have all actors look like they lost 50 lbs and are 10 ft tall.

Any advice would be appreciated.
