I have a tip for improved quality encoding DivX from VCR sources.
A couple of months ago I upgraded my VCR from a 3-head to a 6-head. (I believe these are referred to as 2-head and 4-head in USA) The increase in playback quality alone resulted in an AVERAGE file size reduction of 30% in DivX encoded files of similar content.
Of course, that's kind of an expensive way to get reduced file sizes, but I was shocked at how much of a difference it made.
