Making a compilation DivX/AVI CD from DVD films

Hi there,

This is my first post, so excuse any dumb questions

I want to make a compilation CD-ROM in DivX/AVI format from my DVD movies.

I have Smartripper, FlaskMPEG, and Virtual Dub.

I've managed to convert a few VOB files into .avi's - the only problem I have is with Virtual Dub - when I select MP3 as my audio compression choice the box on the right is blank; therefore I cannot select "44,100Khz" and "96Kbps". Is there a fix to this?
I'm already running Winamp so have no problems running MP3s.

Would I be able to use SoundForge 4.5 to edit the clips together or is this purely audio software?

I have Region 1 and Region 2 films - does this have any bearing for conversion/decoding?

Has anyone else made compilations from DVD movies?

I'd be most interested to know how to do it.
