Any divx4 calculator works just fine for divx5.

thats cool i thought they would have had to reconfigure the calculator to take into consideration the smaller files that are produced. do you know of one for windows media 8?

No, the codec will adjust for that itself. There is no magic involved in birate calculation, in fact it's very simple (desired filesize in bits)/(playlength in seconds). The only problem is that some codecs consider 1 kbit=1024 bits, while others think that 1kbit=1000bit. And ofcause some codecs are less precise than others, but there is no way any calculator can adjust for that.

I'am not sure if wm8 uses 1kbit=1024 or 1000 bits, but because it's only a onepass encoder, it will never be very precise anyway, so just about any calculator will do.

          thanks

          good to know the formula
which would be more precise if i wanted to do it all on my calculator. I could just whip together a trusty old vb coded calculator to make sure the more accurate one is used.
          1 kbit=1024 bits or 1kbit=1000bit.
thanks again for all your help
