Theaters on path to digital films

A group of major theater owners, representing more than a third of the screens in the United States, said Thursday that they will join forces to upgrade their theaters to new digital projection technology.

While the plan is still short on details or a specific timeline, it is one of the biggest steps yet in the film industry's slow move to replace film reels and whirring projectors with arrays of satellite receivers, servers and digital files.

A small number of theaters are already in the process of installing digital technology that conforms to standards set by Hollywood last June. The group of majors, which includes AMC Entertainment, Cinemark USA and Regal Entertainment, said it will collectively negotiate with equipment providers and potential funding sources to bring that process mainstream. I guess the next step would be 60 foot LCD screens and leave the projectors out completely?
Having just been to a cinema for the first time in years I'd forgotten just how blurred the analogue projections can be!
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!

With some of the drege that goes to the theater it is a wonder they will spend the money on upgrading theaters, and with this upgrade I assume will be an upgrade in the cost of a movie ticket...I agree with Lt I think we need more straight to dvd titles...then again I assume that means they will then charge more for them as well

You got it, in the end money runs everything. And the cost will always be passed on to the end user. YOU AND I

My theater is not that bad... like $9 for a ticket, and like $10 for large popcorn and 2 large drinks. (combo)

Wow, you're mean. Do you guys all have 12-speaker surround and a huge-@$$ screen at home? Otherwise, the theater is a better movie experiance.

Yeah, but theaters have bigger screens and better sound than any TV available. Especially the IMAX - boy was Harry Potter good in the IMAX (hugeR screen)

only certain films/reasons i'd go to the theatre. i'd rather stay in and watch a flick--kind of lazy, but that's that.

Well, I am unfortunate and do not have a huge TV or even 2.1 sound. So theaters are the way to go for me. But I still have more than 100 DVDs though.
