ripping large film

I bet youve heard this millions of times:
Ive mastered the art of ripping the smaller dvd's with brill results every time.
But now im getting venturous and want to rip a larger film,
could any of you experts explain in plain english from start to finish in nice easy steps what i do.
ithink i have the main programmes/software ect,,ie: smart ripper,
dvd2avi,tmpgeng
i was gonna use nero.
Could anybody email me if easier the full instructions what to do
