Only getting 1 hr of video on a DVD-R

Hi, I am new to DVD recording and have a couple of questions.

I have a Sony DRX-510UL USB/Firewire all DVD formats burner. When using the bundled software Sonic MyDVD to record a Video DVD the software tells me the disk is full after adding only 70 mins of video. I do this by dragging AVI files into the software's source window.

The media description for DVD-R states that it has 120 mins of recording time. I looked all through the manuals and searched the web with Google but could not find any explanation. Can someone on this board tell me how much recording time I should get with a DVD-R recording video?

Also I only have the bundled software that came with the drive and I am interested in getting something better. Any suggestions for all-purpose DVD authoring software that has everything and is not too expensive would be appreciated.

    Thank You

    DVD Shrink and CopytoDVD...

I am still fairly new to this but I would think that dragging avi files into a DVD-R would me measured in MB, not time...but I dunno

The time on the media indicates the time that can be recorded using a DVD-recorder. These recorders have the ability to record in different quality modes where the highest records max. 60 minutes and the lowest 120 minutes.
To record your AVI to DVD use change the bitrate to change the quality and thus the recording time.
