Blatant Newbie Idiot - Have DVD Writer, Can't Burn DVDS -Is there a guide THAT WORKS?

Yes, Apologies to all - New to the forum (yes, have read the faq's - and done a search....), have Nero 6 ultra, TMPEnc 2.5, Virtual Dub, lots of HD space, lots of AVI's. Writer is Sony DRU500 (I think)

I would like to make AVI's into DVD's (and yes, have the codecs too). How do I do this as simple as possible? I bought a new computer, new W2K OS with nothing else on but TMPEnc and the DVD writer.

When I run TMPEnc, and use the wizard, no matter what file I use, it always says I am 133%+ over the 4.7 gig. I cannot get it to convert only video, it always automatically selects audio too, and I can't stop it.

I know I am new, so please be gentle. No snobs please. Any help well appreciated. Thank you.

I strongly suggest that you get more close to tmpeg encoder and its capabilities...... as well as to some authoring programs.....

but for now ... as a quick resolution I suggest this
procedure....

1. encode your avifiles with Tmpeg to dvd compliant
mpeg2 files (even if it is over the dvdr size...)
2. use a dvd authoring program, such as dvdlab or
Tmpeg DVD author (not tmpegenc. it is a different pogram) to produce a VALID dvd structure......
it does not matter if they are over sized!!

then go to www.dvdshrink.org or www.dvdshrink.info
and download dvdshrink

run dvdshrink in "file mode" and shrink your valid dvd structure (VIDEO_TS) to fit on a
normal dvd r

this should work for you as a quick but good results producing method.... till you found out more on tmpeg encoder or the cinema craft encoder...

That I intend to do, but right now I need a starting block, and this is it, thanks Shiny, I have ready 100's of posts of the past 3 hours, and yours I will trust. --- "Tmpeg DVD author" - I have this too, sorry, meant to say...

OK, gone to do that, and TMPenc just shut down. No error message, no warning, just stopped and closed. Here were my settings:

Used the wizard. DVD -> PAL -> VBR Mpeg II - all the rest on default. ............ that shouldn't do that should it? 2nd version of TMPEnc I've tried, on a clean W2k, P4 2.4, 5th avi i've tried. Maybe I should stick to the world series and a beer...?

I noticed it said my avi was 295 mins long and it isn't, its 89mins...
