Standalone DVDR - How do I re-author to fix...?

I've been recording programming direct from Satellite to my standalone DVDR. When recording I usually start my video 10 minutes prior to the programming and allow to run 10 minutes over. The standalone auto-chapters at regular intervals and creates the most horrid menus.

I'd like to rip to my computer, insert new menus, re-chapter appropriately and also edit the 10 minutes pre/post program.

IE if I have recorded a concert, I'd like to edit out the pre-program stuff, set chapter markers to the beginning of each song, and create a menu which might have a still image of the band on it.

Whats the best/fastest/easiest ways to accomplish these things?

Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (different than "TMPGEnc") to edit, create new chapters and a new menu...

You're the first person I've heard of, recording satellite onto a standalone DVDR. If you're going to rip from your standalone to the PC you may not need to do the following conversion.

However, if in the future you want to record directly from satellite to the PC you will need to convert the Transport Stream to a Program Stream with PVAStrumento being careful to NOT flag the audio stream as variable bitrate.

sfheath I'm intrigued by what you talk of. Have you got any links where I can read up about recording straight to pc? Recording to the standalone is so easy, as simple as operating a vcr, plus it can be set to record when i'm not at home

To record straight to pc do i need special hardware on the pc? Specific outputs on my satellite box? Sure would like to know more about that.

I've also been using the standalone to convert old analog sources (hi-8 stuff). I've been burning to the 1 hour format for best quality and making 2 dvd's of a 2 hour program. Is this a bad way to go about this? If you think this is an ok thing, then what about this scenario...if I have a 90minute video on hi-8 and transfer it to standalone dvdr using 1 hour mode onto 2 dvdr's is there a good way to convert it to compress and fit all 90 minutes to a single dvdr without wasting dvd space or overcompressing it and loosing too much quality?

TD Author is a great little program isn't it?
Plenty of threads if you search on "capture card"for info on hardware/software.
If you record to hard drive 'oversize' DVD file sets, DVD Shrink is a very popular app for squeezing down to fit. You can go a fair way before you get noticeable loss of quality.
