    no sound with AC3

    Hi,

i'm a bit new to all this so please bear with me if i'm not quite up to speed.

    Here's the problem.

I have got a number of avi files containing both video and audio.

When i burn to these to dvd using Win DVD Creator i select the Dolby Digital sound option but some don't have any sound when i then try to play them. They did before.

I used Gspot to look at the files and all the files thar are giving me jip have ac3 sound in avi format. Is that part of the problem?

Is there any better authoring software. I'm not bothered about menu's i just want the discs to autoplay.

And since we're all here i may as well ask my next question. Why the degredation in quality. I heard it was because there are filters running when i watch it as an avi on pc which you obviously don't get when running on a standalone as a DVD. Can't you get the filter to upgrade the file when it runs as an avi? Like i say i'm a newbie to all this and i'm sure that one is a really stupid question.

    Look forward to your replies.

You need to download and install the AC3 filter at http://ac3.sourceforge.net/
This will will allow you to play back that great 5.1 sound.

Which player are you using to play the movie when it's on your HD and which one are you using when it's on a disk?

Windows Media Player on the PC and i'm running on a standalone on disk.

          I don't think its a codec thing.

I think its an encoding/authoring thing.

Is the standalone capable of AC3 sound? Does it play any movies w/ AC3 sound and which one do you have?

I don't think the encoding is to blame, otherwise your PC wouldn't play the sound as well. If Gspot says it's AC3 and you can hear sound in Windows Media your encoding should be fine.
