and how should i compress the files if i want DV quality and to work with the movies in vegas?
I dont want them to be too big...

You could also try Cinema Craft Encoder (CCE).

Just did a couple conversions in Canopus Procoder Express, VOB to Canopus DV. It ran at 1.8x speed.

Main Concept . I get app. 1:1 encoding going from avi to DVD.
I've also used CCE and TMPGenc Plus. On my system
Main Concept definitely fastest
TMPGenc for plit,cut etc.
