Audio and Video Out of Sync

I'm sure this is not a new problem, but perhaps someone has found the magic bullet. I've been trying from some time to convert my video collection to digital format using a VCR for playback and a capture card for recording. I've tried the Hauppauge WinTV, Avermedia EZMaker PCI, Dazzle Digital Video Creator 80 USB, among others. All of these produce files where the audio is noticeably out of sync with the video, and the problem gets worse the further into the file you get, so it's not just an out of sync problem where the audio starts later than the video, it's almost in sync at the beginning of the file. The only thing that seems to have worked so far is recording from a DV tape in my new DV video camera through a firewire card. The only twenty minute tape I created is actually in sync, sound and video. This is not a workable solution for my vast video collection, however. I believe this may work because audio and video are traveling through the same firewire cable at the same time. Of course, if that's the case, the Dazzle USB box should have worked since the audio and video are traveling down the same USB cable, but that one is noticeably out of sync. HELP!

If you have a good deal of hard drive space, try initially capturing the audio as Uncompressed PCM (.WAV). Normally, doing so will ensure that synchronization is retained. You can always use VirtualDub (or one of its variants) to compress it to .MP3 later (Remember, in VirtualDub, to set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy")

What specs is your PC? As this could be one of the reasons.

Kill programs & tasks thats not needed to free up resources.

If using a USB device for capture, unplug all other USB devices
to conserve the available USB bandwidth for capture.

USB 1 is not that clever USB2 is better.
