DVD Authoring and .wmv Files

Brand New to authoring and burning dvd's. Tried several dvd's using the .wmv file high end 2mbs quality video files with erratic results, mostly with erratic starts to video files, frames overlapping etc. Menus work!
? is should authoring be done in mpeg2 only? Somewhere I get the impression the .wmv would work.
I use Sonic My DVD bundled with my Sony DVD burner. The program accepts .wmv movie files in to the authoring program, so I thought.....

Hi there Alphabandaid .. these names just get weirder!

If you want compatibility with standalone DVD players you need to be mpeg2 compliant and burn a DVD structure into a VIDEO_TS folder.
If however, it's just for your own use on the computer, then you have options of DivX and Ogg and all sorts!
I believe newer DVD players will support mpeg4 I think I read somewhere.

The playbackon my pc as well as standalone dvd player behaved the same. End product dvd with .wmv files not good, quite erratic. I wanted to share the video files with others on their home tv, hence the dvd since group viewing is not usually practicle around a pc.
My own use on the pc I use the orginal files as you mentioned.
Looks like I need to make mpeg2 files for dvd authoring. The fact that the authoring program accepted the .wmv files lead me down that road, and I didn't need to convert. Lazy.
I did read soemthing somewhere that Microsoft wants to make .wmv files the DVD standard in the future. NOt sure at what end or level. So much information, so little brain power.
The nickname, long story, related to old guys and veteran affairs.

Yup thats what I read too.

The .wmv does sort of work though. Now I need to figure out how to play back the authored dvd(via a dvd folder save) before burning to avoid this in the future. Encoding really takes some time even at 2 mhz.
