DVD Regions - what works where.

    hi
Im in the process of moving countries, from Miami to London. whilst i've been here i've created several DVD's & have also bought a few.
the dvd's i've created have been NTSC format, but in the UK its PAL.
just wondering if my created DVD's will work & how to get my purchased DVD's to work in UK?
I have all the software just not the knowledge.

    thanks

You'll have to purchase a standalone DVD player that handles/converts both formats (NTSC and PAL are not simply region-specific - they are recorded at different framerates and have different resolutions)

Playback on your PC, however, requires nothing "special"...

yet again, thanks setarip for more knowledge

I doubt it will be a problem as i tend to watch DVD's through my PC hooked up to the TV.

i presume TMPGEnc will allow me to re-encode to PAL should i ever wish to play them on a standalone DVD player.

It will, but it won't do it very well. Frame rate conversion usually causes playback artifacts unless done correctly and TMPG doesn't.

You shouldn't need to worry anyway as long as you get a mutiregion DVD player that is capable of playing PAL or NTSC.

With some DVD players it is necessary to have a multiformat TV to view the disk properly or you will have a black and white picture.

I have a Toshiba sd220e which is multiregion and plays NTSC disks just fine withgout having to have a mutiformat TV.

I agree with you Reiss, the information on this forum is absolutely priceless!

I still want to rally up a group of programmers to make a no-frills NTSC/PAL conversion program that can work with something like DVD Shrink. That would also be priceless!

                  Perfect. Absolutely no probs.
I have a friend and his brother who were so impressed with the machine they both went out and bought one.

In fact you would be better off getting the updated model.

                    Reiss,

Actually, if your television in UK is modern, the NTSC dvd's should play okay with the usual dvd player.

Knowledge without understanding is as a goldmine without a pick.

The back-up (multi-region) NTSC dvd's that is. Not worth buying a new "all-regions" player for the originals as you can make back-ups in "all-regions" setting.

Multiregion DVD players are easily availble and are not that more expensive than non multi-region players. In fact many of the cheaper players are multi-region.
Actually many players can be made multi region by a simple hack.
Even though I bought the Toshiba SD220e already multiregion, it can be made mutiregion, if it isn't already, by a simple firmware upgrade available on the net for download.

You say it is not 'worth it' buying a multi-region player. Why not?
It is an advantage all round to have one. Being able to purchase DVD's from the Internet and from other countries that don't have your region coding can save you money and give you more choice.

Even so, maybe Reiss doesn't want to 'degrade' the quality of his originals by making a backup of it. What's the point of having an original he will never be able to watch?

                              ashy,

UK and US are somewhat different as Hollywood does not "dictate" as much the technical performance of televisions. Most modern European (west european) televisions do not have a problem with playing NTSC dvd movies.

The poster only has a few region 1 NTSC movies and several back-ups. Obviously from the original post, poster wanted to watch the created dvd's and purchased (only a few) NTSC region 1 movies after moving to iUK. Most back-ups are all-regions, so only problem is viewing a few purchased movies. Simplest and most economical method is all regions back-ups as poster stated he could do back-ups and has all necessary software.

The purpose of back-ups is to view the back-up and not view the original.

I am not pushing commecial software nor pushing all region dvd players nor pushing purchase of internet dvd's of other regions. The poster was only concerned with the simplest method of watching those several and few dvd NTSC movies in UK.

A few dvd movies can be backed-up for ~ $5.00 (cost of media).

I stated a simple and inexpensive solution which poster had not thought of....the obvious.

I did not try to push poster into a purchase (seperate poseter from their money).

Really crummy snipe from you, ashy.

I am honest and gave Reiss the simple and inexpensive solution. I don't push software or hardware and I do not suggest such solutions when I do have the understanding that such are not necessary.
