    avi->dvd via idvd

    so i used tmpeg encoder to make the .m2v and .wav files for my short films.

    i plan on using a mac to burn the dvds as they are available in my schools library.

    my question is, will idvd recognize these two files and let me do things fairly normal or am i in trouble here? i plan on burning 2 cds with the files on them then taking to my schools computer lab. anything inherantly wrong that i am missing?

    Hmm...my guess is that it would be best to compress and multiplex the audio with the video. Then you'd be left with a simple .mpg file. I think Imovie can read that...

      how would i go about doing this? i spent like 4 hours at our library trying to get this to work. i have my original avi files on the macs there. i also tried using final cut pro to import my dv cam data as i have both films on there as well but it would freeze when opening up the import screen... ugh

        I think the latest version of "Quicktime Pro" will enable you to convert an AVI file to an Mpeg file.

          ok here is the problem i run into...

          any time that i have converted it, it doesn't keep the 16x9 aspect ratio. likewise, when i import the avi to i movie or final cut, it loses the 16x9

            Are you indeed trying to convert to mpeg 2 format? TMPGENC (the regular program not DVD Author) has template wizards where you can specify the aspect ratio among other things.

              i have used tmpeg and it works fine, except the audio and video are seperate. idvd won't take the .m2v file format and i dont' believe dvd studio pro will either? i could be wrong on that one

                You have to "Multiplex" back together the .m2v file and whatever the separate audio track is (ac3 or mp2) in TMPGENc. That will give you a "combined" (video and audio) mpeg 2 file, which hopefully idvd will accept.

                    Go to "File" > "Mpeg Tools" > "Multiplex" (not simple multiplex). Navigate to where you saved your m2v file and click "Add". Do the same thing for the audio file. In the lower window pane, you should see the two files. Finally, click OK or Run.

                        How did you encode your original AVI file in TMPGENc, or did you use TMPGENc to encode the file to mpeg?

                          i'll give you the full synopsis

                          -created seperate audio and video files in .avi format from premeire
                          -converted the seperate .avi files to .m2v and .wav
                          -tmpeg will take .m2v but won't take the wav, it says it needs some sort of mpeg format audio. i have audio programs that can convert this but wanted to make sure i'm going about this the right way. once i convert my audio to some sort of mpeg (1, 2 or 3) then will the multiplex work?

                            It should. Try first to convert the WAV file to an mp2 file (MPEG-1, layer 2). Remember, DON'T use "Simple" multiplex. Use "Multiplex" (third tab over to the right).
