AC3 or MP2

Can somebody explain to me the difference between AC3 audio and MP2 audio. As most of the low cost authoring software does not support AC3 audio but supports MP2. Which is better and what are the advantages.

AC3 use less disc space and hence less bandwidth. Therefore you can spare more for video. The difference is quite significant.

Ac3 is Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Most commercial DVDs have this as an audio stream choice. Mp2 (Mpeg 1 layer 2) is 2-channel stereo audio. Ac3 is only relevant if you have a nice sound system that will bring out and enhance the 5.1 surround capabilities. DTS (Digital Theater Systems) is a more sophisticated audio system that consists of six tracks (right, left, center, left-surround, right-surround and subwoofer). Again, special audio equipment is required to utilize this technology.

"ormonde" hit the nail on the head. I use mpeg1 layer2 because I don't have the equipment to take advantage of AC3, I play thru my stereo tv. Someday I may regret not using AC3 if I get a good sound system.

Me too........I'd probably invest in a nicer computer system before I would pick up a top-of-the-line audio system.
