DVD editing - replacing subs? How to?

    Hello there folks

This may sound a noob/dumb question for many of u, but i'm newbie here and newbie in dvd authoring as well.

This is what i want: i have recently got a dvd movie from a sister from usa. Although I'm really better in listening/reading english than speaking/writing, i would be really glad if i could "open" this dvd anywhere (a software) in some kind of "editing mode" and re-author (or edit, whatever). The focus here would be replacing French subtiltes to Portuguese-BR subs, as I am brazilian. Currently this DVD and many others I can find to "download" are packed with a set of English/French/Spanish sound tracks and subtitles.

The main idea here is to replace the french subs into portuguese subs (actually this also means my new subs are in any of DivX sub formats - srt, sub... that can be find all over). Letting everything else untouched, or maybe just removing some extras to make it fit a single 4.2 Gb Dvd-r.

Is there any software all around that would make it possible to accomplish this task??

    Thanks for any help.
And sorry if this doubt was already solved in another post, but
    I really couldn't find it.

    Erich.
