TMPGEnc DVD Author - minor menu glitch - help please!

    Hi there,

I'm very new to DVD authoring/burning but finding it very easy thanks to TMPGEnc DVD Author, which makes it all very simple.

I've managed to make a couple of DVDs from video tapes of home movies, including menus.

However, I've noticed a slight glitch on one of the menus.

The DVD basically has 12 different video clips, so I have a 12 part scene menu. When I put the burned DVD into a DVD player, all parts of the menu work perfectly, and are correctly linked to the appropriate video.

The scenes are set out thus:

    1__________7
    2__________8
    3__________9
    4__________10
    5__________11
    6__________12

But, when using the up and down buttons to flick through the items in the menu, scene 10 is always skipped over. The highlight colour goes direct from 9 to 11 (and 11 to 9 when moving the highlight upwards). The only way to get to scene 10 on the menu is to highlight scene 4 then go across to the right. Once you get to 10, it can be selected and it does play the appropriate video.

This skipping of scene 10 in the menu also occurs when playing the DVD on my PC, and when I use the up/down arrows to shift the highlight up and down.

My only idea of the cause was that the scene 10 menu text was slightly out of alignment with the rest, which might have explained why it couldn't be reached by shifting vertically. But having checked the alignment, this proved not to be the case. All menu items are perfectly aligned.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what the cause might be? I'm rather frustrated and out of ideas. It's very annoying as the DVD works perfectly apart from that, and I'm frankly amazed at how simple making my own DVDs was! Being a perfectionist, this little glitch is really bugging me!

Try creatinbg the same DVD again, using a rewriteable DVD (don't want to be wasteful) - but make Chapter 10 start a little later.

Are you burning single layered media or double-layered? If double-layered, perhaps there's a conflict with the layer break...

      Hi, thanks for replying!

I do usually use a Rewritable DVD to practice with, although that disc seems not to be working at the moment, so I've wasted a couple of DVD-Rs with this problem, unfortunately. I will get another RW disc though.

I think I know what you're talking about with setting the chapter a little later. Do you mean that there are certain points where it's not possible to insert a new chapter? One frame out of every few is "out of bounds" and setting the chapter one frame forward is possible.

However, I don't think this is anything to do with my problem.

My DVD is a 3+ hour film of a holiday. I didn't want to deal with a video file that was over three hours long (too hefty to edit, encode, etc), so I broke the video up into smaller pieces, which range from a few minutes to about half an hour in length. Each section of the menu points to one of those videos. I haven't set any chapters inside any of these video clips.

As far as the layer goes, the files are only 3.4 gig in total. I see the gauges for both levels, but my files fit on the left hand gauge comfortably.

I assume that as long as the files aren't over 4.7 gig that the disc will be burned single layer?

I would strongly suggest for burning a set of files thattotal only 3.4Gb, you should use a SINGLE-LAYER burnable DVD...

          Thanks for that.

So does the fact that I can see both gauges in TMPGEnc indicate that the media I'm using are specifically dual layer? Are some discs single and some dual layer?

I assumed that because my files didn't "bleed" into the second layer gauge that the DVD would be burnt as a single layer disc.

          Sorry to sound so clueless.

"Are some discs single and some dual layer?"

Yes - Single-layer burnable media can cost from 30 cents to $1 US. while double-layer burnable media can cost from $7 to $11 US...

The discs I have were nowhere near as expensive as the double layer discs you mention, so they must be single layer?
