TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 problems

I have run into a bit of a problem trying to put a home movie onto DVD. I have captured the video in mpg2 format and was hoping to recode it so I could shrink it with DVD Shrink to fit on a DVD. I have been through the steps and come to a problem in OUTPUT. When I press Begin Output I get a message TMPGEnc DVD Author has encountered a problem actually 2 of them.

The 1st being
The combined birate of the clip exceeds the upper limit for a standard DVD. The combined bitrate of the video and audio of clip "Name" of track "Name" is exceeding the upper limit for a standard DVD. The current bitrate is video: 9800kbps, audio: 224kbps, combined: 10024kbps. The combined video and audio bitrate can be no more than 9.848Mbps (9848kbps)

The 2nd one
Exceeds a 4.7GB DVD Capacity. You are about to create a DVD folder od about 5635 MB. This exceeds the capcity of a 4.7 GB DVD of about 4437 MB. You should use a double layer 8.5 GB DVD for file of such size.

Then I have buttons Ignore & Cancel. When I press Ignore. It comes up with Warning Ignoring these errors will result in an out of standard DVD. Do you want to ignore these errors? Buttons Yes or No. When I press yes it shuts down.

Any advice would be apreciated as this is my 1st time of doing this sort of thing.

I've never used TDA on a home video but I might help with a couple of points.

Standard DVD uses an audio bitrate of 48kbps, both PAL and NTSC, considerably lower than your 224kbps. You may find converting the audio bitrate is sufficient. VirtualDubMod I think should do this.

I'm assuming you're writing a single layer DVD. The ignore in the Begin Output section is to allow you to create a DVD structure of IFO, BUP & VOBs in a VIDEO_TS folder that DVD Shrink or similar can compress to the required 4.7Gb.
The shutting down I think is due to the non-standard bitrate but that's only a guess.

Just checked out VDubMod:
Open your file in it, select Video, click direct stream copy.
Select Streams, stream list, right click on your sound stream, select full processing mode.
Right click again on it and select conversion, then the 48k button, OK twice and save as a new stream. Good luck

But as soon as I press saved as I got this error message

The source video stream uses a compression algorthim which is not compatible with AVI files. Direct stream copy cannot be used with this video stream.

Should I capture the video another way and start again?

Your MPEG-2 is possibly not DVD-compliant. Try the following:


1) Use "TMPGEnc" (or "TMPGEncPlus") to convert the MPEG to compliant MPEG2-for-DVD format - Use "TMPGEnc's" DVD wizard/template to accomplish this

2) Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc") to easily create the required additional DVD files and structure (and chapters and a menu, if you wish)


**If the combined filesize of the DVD "package" written to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use DVD Shrink (or similar) to compress


If your O/S is either Win2000 or WinXP, TMPGEnc DVD Author can also burn your DVD. Otherwise, use NERO to burn in "DVD-Video" mode
(As an alternative to "TMPGEnc DVD Author", you could use "DVDLab")

But TMPGEnc didn't work either it came up with this error

Cannot be open or supported.

I captured the video using NeroVision. Under Select a capturing template I had DVD.

Maybe I should capture it in AVI then do the what you have written?

Isn't there another "piece" of your NERO package that will DIRECTLY allow you to create a DVD from this video?

Yes there is but the it is to big to fit on a DVD so I have to shrink it.

The first "burn" the NERO-created "DVD" to your harddrive ("Image Recorder") - and then use DVD Shrink (or NERO Recode) to compress...

I have now captured the video into AVI and at the moment are encoding it using TMPGEnc, then I will go into TMPGEnc Author then DVD Shrink and see how I go. Even though this takes forever I think it may be the easiet way to go. I have tried everything in Nero but still can't do what I want. So have gone back to your original instructions and will let you know how I have gone. Thanks so much for your help.

I think I must be having a real senior moment as I still cannot get TMPGEnc DVD Author to work. I have recoded the file using TMPEGnc plus into a MPEG-2 file. When I tried to finish it in TDA I press Begin Output and the program shutsdown.

Please what am I doing wrong.

I've never heard of a file once through TMPGEnc failing at TDA.
I wonder if puting your intermediate file into VirtualDubMod and posting the 'file info' here might reveal something.
