Problem with subtitles !

I have a big problem with subtitles. I use smartripper to rip the movie,making 2 files (m2v and ac3), I import them to Spruce Up and then I burn the movie. The problem is that I can not see subtitle? Can anyone helpme ?

As far as I'm concerned, you definitely need vob and ifo files, for there to be a movie and subtitle (if there is any in the DVD).

After importing m2v and ac3 to Spruceup I have vob and ifo files, the movie plays normally, but without subtitles

As you may or may not know, subtitles are stored in seperate streams in a VOB file. The IFO file knows the relation between a language and the correct subtitle stream. When you rip a VOB file completely the subtitles streams are in there. But, for space saving, using e.g. smartripper, you can disable certain stream during ripping (not when making a full backup offcourse).

Since you have an AC3 file and an M2V file I assume you did use the option in smartripper to rip seperate files... In that case the subtitle stream is definitely gone.

But even so...

When you import them into Spruce it, during export, multiplexes both files to a new VOB and IFO. Since spruce don't know there should be any subtitles it creates an IFO without a reference to the subtitles and it also does not mux the subtitles in. So, there are two reasons why you do not have subtitles.

1. it is not in the resulting VOB (for that you need to rip subtitles and find a muxer (not spruce) that can mux it (I only know of subtitle creator from DVD wise, but it quite sucks)

2. the IFO does not contain a reference to the subtitlestream.


What you can do is extract the subtitles of the original VOB by using VOBSUB and then insert them (as images) on the movie using virtualdub. This works great. (The only drawback is they cannot be shut off, since the've become part of the movie. But... so, a reference in the IFO is also unneeded).

note:

I assume you split the VOB into AC3 and M2V to compress the M2V (and AC3) to make it fit on smaller media or something. Otherwise it would be smart to use the original VOB in the authoring proces which then includes the subtitles. Only... the IFO the authorer creates still does not... I do not know if Spruce can handle VOB inputs, but e.g. DVD Wise can.
