extracting captions from an avi file to make into dvd

hi all. I have a question. I want to know if i can extract the captions from an avi file i have, and then use that captioning for when i burn my dvd??

if so, what do i need? ans how exactly do i do it?

if really new to this and only made one dvd so far. A movie i converted from an avi file, made menus using Nero vision, and burned with Nero 6.6.0.15a

If they're a PERMANENT part of the AVI and not a separate file, I don't think there's a way to extract them because they're actually part of the pictures.
