Are you sure there isn't a setup somewhere to avoid the automatic 'smart' mode?

The stretching thing that r0lZ mentioned is called smart mode on Sony TV's. It stretches the picture horizontally and makes the picture too wide. People will look short and out of proportion.

With my TV. It automatically switches from 4:3 to 16:9 due to switching ability using RGB scart.

Yes, I forgot to say that your TV set must be correctly connected to be able to automatically switch modes. A RGB SCRAT (with all pins connected!) should work.

No. It is a portable player with a little screen attached. The TV has absolutely no setting. The player controls it.
