The Evil 24 Bit/48000/LPCM Audio Stream

I own a Music Video Disk by one of my favorite groups. I would like to be able to be able to edit the clips (via Video Redo/Womble) after ripping them via DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink. Here is the issue however. The only source audio that comes with the VOB stream is “24 Bit, 48000, LPCM” and it is the 24 bit that is the problem here.

No matter what I do in VideoRedo or Womble Video Wizard 2005. All I hear is a White Noise type of static. Even if I convert the VOB over to MPEG2 it still does this (if the program even lets me load the file)

What I would like to know is if there is anyway to convert the source mentioned above to 16bit? I have tried using every program I could think of from TMPGenc (latest build) and de-multiplexing then re-multiplexing (which will not accept the audio stream), from Wombles which does not even see the audio in the VOB.

I even tried using Besweet light but it did not help.

If anyone has an idea, or had this issue and knows a fix/workaround for this I would be more than humbled.

What scares me is if more DVD’s start coming out like this and there is no solution. From other threads I read none seems to ever have given an answer.

Demux (DVD Decrypter) convert to AC3 (using BeLight as you have tried - see here) and Remux (use Muxman - see link in my signature).

Just a headz up. Your idea sounded perfect. However I do not think I did something right, and/or Besweet cannot handle the "24 bit,48000, LPCM" stream conversion. I demuxed the audio in Decrypter along with the video. Then I converted it over via Ac3, and even tried Wave 16 bit. Both output files played white noise.

Now I did load the demuxed file into Wavlab and save it as a special type of .wav ..however the audio was slightly out of sych.

Maybe I did something wrong. Thanks again for the advice, seems you have pointed me in the right direction.

It's just a matter of setting it to 44.1khz, 2ch AC3. Take a small bit first (e.g one song/chapter) and play with the settings.

Thanks for the audio editor info. I will check it out, however if the Besweet/Muxman solution works that would make things easier.

Then the ac3 is not right. And my apologies - AC3 should be 48khz. Brainfart today. LPCM source may be 44.1 though (check it out).

Your still on the money with the Muxman dealio. However the problem was I could not get the streams to demux correctly. Here is some input I got that seems to work. Just in case you or anyone else is interested in this subject.

Point of order. You use 'Demux' for LPCM in DGIndex. That will make a WAV file. You use 'Decode to WAV' only for AC3. LPCM doesn't need to be decoded, only repackaged.

Yes. Set Audio/Demux and then do File/Save Project and Demux Video.

Worked Like a Charm

2) Selected and Saved the Chapter (Music Video of Choice) to a VOB
3) Opened DGindex, and opened the VOB. Then Selected Demux all Audio tracks, and then did a file/save and Demux Video.
4) Opened up the .wav file in Cool Edit. Converted down to 16 bit, then even Normalized the Audio.
5) Ran BeLite and transcoded the .wav file over to Ac3
6) Ran Muxman and merged the video file created by DGindex with the Ac3.

Renamed the .VOB extension over to .mpg

7) Opened up Video Redo and edited my start and end points.
8 Saved Video file
9) Played perfect in WMPC


This procedure came from the help of the admins over at Doom 9. I take no credit for this. I am just posting for anyone else who might run into a brick wall with this down the line.
