What is DVD Authoring?

Can anyone tell me what Authoring is and why i would use it?

"DVD authoring" is, quite literally, creating your own DVDs - just as authoring a novel is writing your own book. You start from scratch, make your video, convert it to acceptable DVD format, create the extra information files necessary to provide the needed instructions for a DVD player to play the video, etc...
