Burning Multiple KVCD to One DVD

I thought this would be as simple as opening TMPGEnc DVD Author & adding each movie to a different track, possibly having to re-encode audio to 48000 KHz.

However, when I attempt to add file in TMPGEnc DVD Author I get the following error:
    -could not initialize decoder-

The movies are in *.dat format. Using VCD Gear to extract the mpg (on every different dat) I get the following error:
-file is not a dat file or does not have correct dat signature-

I do not want to burn to CD-R, the whole idea is to avoid having more discs to store. I would prefer 5 KVCD movies on one DVD rather than 5 CD-Rs.

Have you simply tried to rename the .dat files to .mpeg/.mpg ?

proper mpg's from a vcd copied as dat files can simply be renamed to ".mpg" (the extension)but when you create a KVCD it is non-standard, so i'm not sure if it will work. it certainly works with a standard vcd. try it though, otherwise you may have to re-encode.

      EDIT: jmet you're quick today

i know u can simply rename the dat to mpg...

this is what i tried first, when dvd author got the error i decided to try using vcd gear...

i have also tried opening the files in TMPGEnc Plus but they crash it...

Your .dat files are the problem. They weren't encoded properly to begin with.

yes, there's no doubt the .dat files are the problem... specifically something to do with the way KVCDs are made...

i don't know much about KVCD other than they are highly compressed yet preserve a decent quality picture... i do know that the GOP structure is altered to achieve this... it is here where the problem lies for me trying to do what i have mentioned above IMO... funny, the movies work fine when burned on CD-R as non-standard VCD...

i think there would be a lot of other people who would like to achieve what i am trying to do, but....... alas......

Do you have MPG files also? If not, maybe use the burning program that the KVCD was burned with?

you should know that making a KVCD creates a non-standard disc, hence the problem now using standard vcd templates.

what is a KVCD? All I know about are VCD and SVCD. That is all Nero burns as well.

with the cost of a dvd writer and blank dvd's it seems foolish to go this route, even for a cheap-ass like me.

i tend to agree but i didn't encode the movies...

having said that, the quality when using a stand alone player is very very good when considering the size of the files though...

the only thing i can suggest is to try and raise the direct show in tmpgenc environmental settings....i have not tried a KVCD to DVD conversion.

Maybe if MPC opens it... save it as something else?

I have done 3 DVD movie to KDVD encoding with MP2 audio and 2 DVD movie to KDVD with AC3/DTS audio.

Plays fine on my SAP, but as LT. said, you have to test a sample to ascertain if the movie will play or not since the matrix and GOP is changed.

You can find more info on kvcd.net

the movies play fine if burned on CD-R as non-standard VCD...

as i said in the original post, i want to burn more than one KVCD movie on a single DVD-R... this is a simple process using TMPGEnc DVD Author, however, when I attempt to add file in TMPGEnc DVD Author I get the following error:
                              -could not initialize decoder-
