adding subtitles to avi file

Ok..be gentle with me..i am sure some have asked this b4...
i have an .avi file, a .sub file and a .idx file(dunno what this one is for or necessary)..
ALL i want is..
create a new .avi file with the subtitles permanently imbeded in it...( i do not need to create dvd)

U need to convert the .sub file to .srt file.Use SUBRIP

Now name this .srt file to exactly the same name as ur avi e.g My Film.avi and My Film.srt.Now if u put the .srt file and the .avi files in the same folder and burn,ur players shd play the avi with the subtitle.

Ome more thing...
I have a .sub and a .idx file,,,,what is the .idx file and do i have to mess with it? or is converting the .sub file to .srt file enough? (the .sub file is much bigger)

I used avidemux and converted the .idx file to .srt file...AND IT WORKS!!!! thanks...
