vhs to dvd: shrink the files?

I am using a Dazzle dvc 150 to copy vhs movies to my hard drive. The files are to big to put on a 4.7gb or 8.5 gb blank dvd. How can I shrink the video files and burn them on a blank dvd? Any advice would be very helpful! I am new at this as well. Thanks
