How Do I Deal With Poor Video Quality?

A friend of my brother-in-law gave him a DVD that he had burnt and he wants me to fix it.

The video quality is horrible. The Hue is all wrong. It looks like it was recorded off an old TV with a crappy VCR. Or an old 8mm reel, kinda flickery.

It's bare bones and it's been cut in to, so it jumps in the middle. And there's only one cell in each Title. That's the whole DVD, right here...



Any suggestions (besides telling him to chunk it)?

Many things can cause undesirable video. The source must be as clean and clear as possible in order to get a decent duplication of it. If the source was captured onto a pc via a capture card, the capturing settings might have also contributed to the horrible looking video, perhaps too much compression.

If it was recorded onto a stand-alone DVD recorder, and the source material is of better quality than the recording of it, I would see if the recorded DVD was set for long duration instead of SP. SP on a single layer 4.7GB DVD blank gives you 2 hours recording time at a very good quality. Any longer duration below SP acts just like the old vcr did, the more crammed onto the tape, the cruddier the video looks.

Ok. I've looked all over for an explanation of Avisynth. I downloaded a bunch of plugins for it, but isn't Avisynth itself a plugin for another program?

AVIsynth is not a plugin. It is a frameserver which accepts plugins.

Sadly, for new users, it does not have a GUI, but relies on simple AVS scripts, editable in notepad.

It wasn't worth the trouble. Wasted too many hours on it.

I did convert the DVD to AVI using DVD2AVI. But it turned a 3.5 GB movie into 103 Avi's (192 GB). Then I find out that there only about 5 or 6 programs that utilize Avisynth.

I tried VirtualDubMod. Couldn't get it to cooperate.

DIKO. Nothing.

Boilsoft AVI to VCD SVCD DVD Converter. Couldn't work it.

I'm sure if I wanted to spend some hard cash I could do it, But guess what...

That movie is HISTORY.

actually many apps accept avisynth scripts, just about all if you wrap your script with makeavis.

blu is correct, but depending on the types of problems you're having, image quality can be improved. things like grain, chroma noise, shakiness, white balance, levels etc have sophisticated plugins that work rather well. it will be time consuming for first time users though
