Problem with subtitles playing unasked for

Two times recently I have had problems with subtitles playing at start up with out being asked for. My normal process is DVDD, wizard if necessary, to hard drive, DVDRemake Pro for editing, Pgcedit to check, Dvd Shrink and then Imgburn.

I did have to chage to DVDfab on these two occasions to get a complete rip.

I would very much appreciate any input! I don't want to loss the subtitles. I have ran into problems in the past doing that.

Second question- what is the differency between a subtitle and a forced subtitle?

Post your final IFOs and we'll see if the stream is turned on by default.

Forced subtitles are either:

1. Declared in the IFO as forced and are usually turned on when you press No subtitles in the menu. This mostly includes "alienspeak". They can be turned off, however (with the remote or by editing the IFOs).

or

2. Are marked as forced in the VOB and are turned on irrespective of what you do. All menu highlights are forced subtitles.

Thank you for the information on forced subtitles.

I have attached the IFO's. I was surprised when I explored the dvd to find only two IFO's. The original is a very old DVD and has FBI warnings and commericals mixed up with the movie. I did try and use pgcedit to check if the subtitles were turned on by defult but i however did not know what i was looking for.

Right - the subbies are certainly not turned on in the IFOs. Open VTS_01_1.VOB in DVDSubEdit and check in the bottom left and see if they are forced on. I doubt it though. It's probably your player settings.

ok I open it up in subedit and you can clearly see the subtitles on the screen. but it say's subtitles=0 in the lower left.

No, they are not forced start. Of course you can see them on the screen. DVDSubEdit would be pretty hopeless if it didn't display the subs for you to edit

So, it's something on your player.

ok I feel stupid! I never used the program before so I had that coming BAHahaha.

Try to check the "Only show forced subpics" option in DVDSubEdit, to see if there are individual forced subpic in the stream.

Also, verify the setup of your player. Have you configured a preferred subpic language?

Hi rOIZ-by choosing only show forced subtitles results in a blank screen. I have yet to configure my player for sub preferences. ( I, feeling somewhat abashed, did not even think of it.) I will hazard a guess and assume that English would be on by default.

However the DVD in question here has only Spanish and Portuguese subtitles, yet my other problem child DVD plays English subs at start up.

I would imagine you both are right and it is a set top player issue. What I don't understand is why is the player so selective. (many X many back ups have played on this player)
