    VHS to DVD

Has anyone ever convert VHS movies into DVD movies?
    1. How is the quality of the movie?
    2. Can you preserve the subtitles?
    3. What are the hardwares needed?

You would need some kind of capturing device wheather it be something like Dazzle that hooks up from the VCR to your pc or by using a Capture card that you would hook up to your VCR.

Its a bit time consuming and a bit more advanced than just backing up a movie. Probly not worth the effort unless its something that isnt on DVD like home video.

The quality will dpend on a lot such as the actuall quality the video already is, what file format you rip it to your hard drive as and what size you rip it as.

Dont exprect top of the line DVD quality if it is comming from VHS but you can do pretty good with this guide:

      I found this most helpful.
I use the Dazzle to capture video from my camcorder or VCR to my computer.

That would be the best bet 'if' the VHS will come out on DVD. Also just to let you know, some of the older movies that you might have on VHS now will not achieve the quality of the newer DVDs that are coming out now even if it becomes available in DVDs. It would be better than the VHS, but just won't be as crisp as the newer movies. A good example is RainMan, which I got on DVD. It was better than the VHS, but IMHO, not worth the 18 bucks because I can get pretty close to that converting my VHS to DVD on my own.

But whatever you'd like to do. Some of my VHS is not available in DVDs so I went with the TV tuner/capture card and am glad I did.

If you have a wal mart near you, I saw they have a large selection of OLDER movies new on dvd on sale for $4.99 you may want to take a look and see if the movie you want on dvd is there.

Capturing and converting on the computer is a pain (at least for me..I used Pinnacle).

Easiest way is to get a cheap Home DVD Recorder, and go straight from VHS into the Home DVD Recorder....no computer needed.

I use it to convert all VHS/S-VHS titles I have that aren't available on DVD....yet
