A video’s Language menu lists 3 audio options – English, French and Spanish. Tracing though in PgcEdit confirms SPRM(1) set to 0 For English, 1 for Spanish and 2 for French. These 3 streams are listed in the PGC Editor. By default (passing direct to the main movie rather than via the Language menu) SPRM(1) is set to 15 – a stream which doesn’t appear in the PgcEditor.

The VLC player plays English by default and recognises only this stream. Similarly DVDShrink recognises only English.

When the DVD is opened in PgcEdit a warning appears : “Warning: There are different commands in the various PGCs of the Menu LUs of the VMGM domain .......”. Could this be linked to the above problem ? – I would be grateful for help.

15 is a special value meaning that no audio selection has been set. It's the default value of SPRM 1 when the DVD is inserted. Usually, a SetSTN command is executed before the playback of the movie to force a specific stream. (Note that SetSTN can also be used to reset the audio to 15, "not set".)

If the value of SPRM 1 is 15 when a title is played, the player is supposed to select the best audio stream, based on the user's preferences. In your example, if your player has been configured to play the French audio, it will play stream #2. But if it has been configured, say for Deutsch, it will play stream #0 (the first stream available, normally the original language of the film), as your preferred audio language is not present in the DVD, and the player should try to enable a Deutsch subpic stream.

Similarly, value 62 for the Subpic stream (SPRM 2), means also "not set".

In PgcEdit, use the Virtual Player Setup to change your preferred audio and subpic language codes, and trace a DVD without SetSTN commands. You will see that even if nothing is programmed to select a specific stream, the right streams will be used if they are available.

This is why it's always useful, at the appropriate time in the navigation, to set the default audio stream.

Doing this by using PGCEdit's Jump 2 PGC function (exploring the audio menu before jumping back to the main menu) makes this easy.

Many thanks for your reply with the explanation of the default Audio and Subpicture settings.

PgcEdit, and IfoEdit list the 3 AC3 audio streams,. However, DVDShrink lists only English and VLC plays only English irrespective of the audio selected. Is there a way of verifying if the French and Spanish streams have been deleted from the DVD or (hopefully) somehow just de-activated ?.

Also I would be grateful for help on what action can be taken in response to PgcEdit’s warning message quoted in my question.

How does one go about accommodating two settings (determin the default audio and open on e.g. the main menu) from the Jump to PGC upon DVD insert. ?

Just navigate through the menus like you would do on a real player to set your preferred streams up, then continue to trace to the point where you would like the DVD to start when you insert it (for example to the main menu), and apply the Jump2PGC function at that point.
