difference between 6ch and 2ch audio??

I'm currently using dvd2one to backup my movies. There's a point right before starting it where you can choose to either take one of the 6ch sound, or 2ch sound, or keep both. Would it be a problem to keep only the 6ch audio? I know that's the surround sound capability of 6 channels. If I only kept that and didn't have a home theater setup, would it be a problem? Would I need to keep the 2 channel audio in case of that possiblity?

    Thanks!

I don't think that should be a problem. I believe that virtually all standalone DVD players automatically downmix 5.1 DolbyDigital audio to two channel stereo, if that's all your system supports. Just make certain that the audiostream is NOT DTS (which may result in either silent output or damage to your speakers)...

I know that virtually all dvd movies are made with both 6ch & 2ch available. That's why I figured that the standalone might not be able to downmix the sound as you say. Or else there wouldn't be a need for the 2channel audio to be there, right? I'll burn it and try it out though and see what happens.

Wrong - it's undoubtedly there because it's been there since "The Beginning" - when most standalone DVD players didn't have 5.1 processing capability...

So far so good, I tried it out and it plays just fine without home a theatre. I noticed the digital sign came on the standalone display. I have this player connected to a simple shelf system and it worked fine.
