I use Sony DRU500 and DRU510 recorders and have been happy. Read my other posts on getting reliable 4x burns with these burners.

You might find Trusted Reviews' 7 burner review helpful: http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=82

Drive size? If you are going to backup one at a time 20Gb free would do.

N.B. The media you use is going to greatly effect the quality of your backups.

Nah, Sony have the most problems. Get yourself a Pioneer DVR105 if you still can, or if not get the 106.
