I recently purchased new Ritek DVDR and am now getting a message that th medium is illegal. I have used Ritek before and have never had a problem. I upgraded my firmware on the sites from one of the posts here but am still getting that message.
I had the same problem with my new ND1300A and "budget" media that was supposed to be tested on the recorder.
When I changed to Memorex Pro the writer worked first time.
