    TDK 440N - Won't do 4X

I have a TDK 440N which is supposed to do 4X - USB 2.0 connect.

I am using Memorex and TDK +R 4X labelled blanks.

DVD Decrypter reports supported write speed of media at 2.3 &3.9X; set at MAX and my max write speed comes to 2.6X (avg. 2.5X)

    Any advice?

    Thanks.

Not sure I can help....but I do have the same burner.

My guess would be that the Memorex blanks are your problem.

When I buy blanks-I try to see if there is a compatability chart that recognizes the 440 for 4x speeds.

Not all blanks are created equal, and even if they're rated at 4x-it doesn't mean your burner will accept them.

On a side note-I "flashed" my firmware to allow expanded compatability with different media, and it worked perfectly (I believe the firmware now is 1.09).

Many sites that sell blanks will list which burner's they will work at 4x with, and even link to the firmware upgrade site!

        Good Luck

Pioneer 105 , fixed it now - the problem lay in the software probably didn't transfer to xp properly when i changed, (it was roxio easy cd/dvd creator ) renowned for being not so good, just changed it with nero 6 and it works a dream now , I have now realized how much better nero 6 is , so much more options!

For you guys running IDE drives, make sure that DMA is enabled on your IDE channels....But I'm not too sure what the problem could be on the USB drive...

At least two people have cured slow speed USB connections by installing the drives internally. A recent thread also came up with the PC being USB 1 !!!
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!

Slightly different drive ... but same problem

I had a TDK 420N ... same as 440 but will only burn DV+Rs ... and had the same problem. The fix was ... for me ... to return the drive because I had soooooo many coasters and buy a Sony DRU-530A. Well, I had the same problem with the Sony ... not so many coasters, but very slow on a very fast drive. Called Sony ... and they almost had a heart attack when I told them I was using Memorex disk! They absolutely told me they are the worst disk you can use ... suggested, naturally, Sony as number one but ... to their credit ... said Verbatim is just as good as Sony. I took their advice and switched to Verbatim ... and along with upgrading the firmware for my new drive ... everything flys now ... never less than the 4x advertised ... and ZERO coasters. Cheers ...

Firmware upgrade isn't on the TDK site.

It's on the Shop 4 Tech website-under a link referring to compatability of blank DVD's.

Clink on the "Matrix" DVD-R blank's,and it will give you the a link to The Firmware Upgrade site-or maybe you can get there directly.

Remember there's a lot of disclaimer's about how it can f*ck up your burner-so beeeee careful-It worked great for mine.

Believe when I upgraded it wasn't at TDK-now it is ?

My firmware upgrade was 1.09,but maybe this is newer.

TDK says internal only-mine is external, but hopefully same thing.

                        Good Luck.

That one I saw; they put internal ONLY in caps, so I didn't want to venture it.

I think I have 1.08, but I am not quite sure where I saw that.

Still mystified why TDK 4X discs don't do 4X.

Download "DVDinfo Pro" It will show you what version firmware you have on your burner. I know mine is 1.09 for sure (after the upgrade).
DVD infopro also reads DVD blank's info to make sure it's rated 4x(a very handy tool, and it's freeware).

Are you only using the Memorex blank's? Try a better blank.
