    dvd error

When I try to burn to DVD-R i get a message saying something like:

    'Power calibration error'

I get this on Nero and Roxio

It's ok on my friend's drive, which is exactly the same, and with DVD+R.

I am running WIN ME if this helps.

"I get this on Nero and Roxio"

If you have both Nero and Roxio installed simultaneously, there have been known conflicts reported. Try uninstalling one or the other programs and then reinstall the one you prefer and try your burning process again.

"my friend says you can't write over 4gb on WIN ME. is this true?"

Specifically, you can't write an INDIVIDUAL file greater than 4Gb - such as an .ISO image file of a DVD.

You CAN, however, write a GROUP of files greater than 4Gb - such as the .IFOs, .BUPs, and .VOBs that comprise a standard DVD "package"...

          gettin stuck now

i am still looking for help for my dvd-r problem! could it be the recorder? could it be WIN ME? could it be the software? well, what could it be?

          i have WIN ME
          i have NERO 6
          i have DVD SHRINK
          i have A +/- DVD-WRITER (NEC DRIVE)
          i have DVD+Rs WHICH WORK
          i have DVD-Rs WHICH DON'T WORK
          i have A 1.2Ghz PROCESSOR
          and 512 MB SDR-RAM

The different discs that haven't worked, including a shop's own brand, i have had reitec's arita discs, i've had a DIFFERENT shop's brand, a white top which my friend gave me and a bulkpaq. Most of these discs have been 4x, some have been 2x, i've tried different speeds.

          I get a message saying:

          'Power calibration error'

on roxio and nero. i was having the problem before i installed roxio and after uninstalling it. i've even re-installed nero!

my friend has exactly the same drive and can write to the discs that i can't use! so it's not a rubbish drive or anything, in case it's faulty, but it does write DVD+R.

          Can anyone help? Please?

            To duckmagicuk2:

Are you "Ripping" the files to your HD first before you attempt to burn DVD disks? I assume you are trying to burn video and not data. Is this correct? Also, have you checked to see if your hard drive is formatted as "Fat32" or "NTFS"?

i do DVD shrink to hard drive then onto disc. as i have said, there are no problems with dvd+r. could it be that the dvd-r bit isn't working? HD is FAT32. the drive might be faulty. the first discs i bought were dvd+r, so i guess i hadn't tried dvd-r before now. i have tried several different makes. do you think i should return my writer to www.bigpockets.co.uk ?

              Thanx to anyone helping,

"HD is FAT32. the drive might be faulty."

I believe that is your problem as there is a 4 gig file limitation on Fat32 formatted drives.

When I had this problem it was that the writer could not write to the discs at the max speed. When I lowered the write speed, I quit getting the error. You have tried different media and written at slower speeds, so your problem is elsewhere. I don't know what to try.

so who thinks it's FAT 32?
and who thinks it's a faulty writer?
and who thinks it's another problem?

remember, i am burning films, which are loads of .ifo , .bup and .vob . so is the 4gb file limitation in effect here?

i bought the NEC writer at www.bigpockets.co.uk , so if anyone else has this writer, please help or tell me if you have had the same problem or not. here is as much info. about the writer as possible:

                    NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A

                    It writes to dvd+/-r

                    thanx to anyone helping

does anyone know what this 'power calibration' is? is something not powerhul enough. i've had it running on a 500Mhz and WIN98 before now. would re-formatting without FAT 32 work?

                      thanx

Try Google "Power calibration error DVD". There is hit on someone with a NEC drive. Most allude to problems with media. I do not believe it is related to FAT32.

Try burning at a lower speed to eliminate the "Power calibration" error message...

                            i've tried 2.4x , i can't go lower than that!

still tryin, might be power supply or IDE cables. Don't lose sleep over it, as it might just be a faulty drive, but if you have had a similar problem or have any good ideas, please let me know!

                            Thanx again!
