dvd burning

Hi all, newbie here trying to learn the ropes and struggling big time. I will have my comp soon and looking at downloading movies music etc off the net. My question is what is going to be the best softeware to use to burn these movies to dvd that will play on my dvd player. I want to maintain a decent quality of the movie still as well. Whats everything that i could possibly need and what does each do. For instance a movie that is 3 hours long how do i fit that on one disc so i can watch it. And any advice on the best dvd discs to use would be great.
