    Hardware Error underpants thing

I'm new to all this, so apologies if I am asking the same old question...
I am using DVD Decrypter and DVD shrink to copy a single-layer sized version of DVD's to my hardrive. Then, in theory at least, I am using Instant CD/DVD to burn to a new DVD-R. Hardware, in case it's important, is Sony DVDRW DW-U14A (-RW only) and a 2.8Ghz Pentium and ASUS board, with 512MB memory. The discs are labelled 'DVD-R 2x-4x Premium Grade A', but otherwise unbranded. They weren't that cheap...
My first attempt was stunningly successful, and I ended up with a new disc which plays happily on my cheap and cheerful Alba Player. Hooray!
    But...
I now have four unplayable discs to add to my collection and I have no idea why.
These are the error messages I am getting...
Hardware Error: The disc application layer has issued a command that the drive does not support.
    Hardware Error:
Write 32768 bytes at position 2182208

    Sense Info: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 12 00 00 00 00 24 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    Command: 2A 00 00 21 4C 40 00 00 10 00
Then I get an invitation to retry, and get:
Access violation at 004AEAD5 in module ICopy.exe. Read of address 0000000
The thing is, everything seems to be going swimmingly until the very last moment, when Instant CD/DVD is 'reinitialising device'.
It looks like all the previous stuff has happened exactly as it should - if I take the disc out and look at the track side, it certainly looks as if it has been completely filled. But it won't play.
I've done the reinstallation thing, and the turn off all other running software thing, but it hasn't changed the result. Any ideas, anyone?
    Update
I got in touch with Pinnacle, who suggested reinstallation of Instant CD/DVD after installing and running 'EndItAll' by Neil J Rubenking, which is available on the PC Magazine site. EndIt All is a useful utility for closing all running processes which might get in the way of installation/running of programs. The following procedure appears to have solved my problems:
Uninstall all DVD or CD writing software.
    Clean the registry.
    Empty the recycle bin
    Reboot.
    Install EndItAll.
    Close antivirus and firewall software.
Run EndItAll to close unnecessary processes.
Re-Install other programs one at a time, rebooting after each and ensuring that antivirus and firewall have been closed and all unnecessary running processes have been ended (with EndItAll) and also that the registry is clean prior to installing. This helps ensure a good install.
Use EndItAll to close those running processes whenever a burn is being made. This helps ensure a good burn with all available resources being used and nothing running which might interfere.
    Comments anyone?
