newbie to dvd recording/burning/ripping

Could someone please help me get on track. I have a loptop with dvd player/CD rewriteable. I just recently downloaded DVD Shrink. Can I burn/backup store bought DVD or rented DVD's with my laptop...using.....Shrink.....if not can someone explain the steps to me and what I will need to do.

No. You need a DVD burner (different than a CD burner)...

can i do it on a video dic cdr?

if not what is my best plan for purchasing equipment

I do also have a desktop do I just buy a drive for it? If so do you have any product suggestions? approx cost?
