DVD playback locks up towards end

Hi. Had this problem on a couple of my back ups now & I can't work out what's wrong! About 95% of the way through playback the DVD starts to "stick" jumping forward, missing a several frames until evenually it just locks. Seems to be the last chapter & always this is near the end of the movie which has played fine until that moment. Does this on my stand alone skipping until it stops and it competely locks up with PowerDVD when it hits the dodgy point. Tried ripping the last couple of vobs to to my hard drive but it just crashes the ripper also.

I'm just using CloneDVD2 for the backups, ripping first with Smartripper. Some seem fine but others do this.. Could it be a media thing? I'm using Bulkpack -R orange tops and an Optorite burner, if that helps.

Need to work out a way to stop making coasters! thanks!

Yup.. think ur right.. Ritek seems to be the brand of choice, thanks. Only thing is I'm sure last time this occured I re-ripped etc, ... same thing happened.. but then I was still using the same media... sure wish I hadn't just bought a new pack of 25.....

Hmmm ... same thing has started to happen to me with Bulkpaq orange too.

The last two DVDs I burned went a bit stuttery until they locked up (the same thing happens on different standalones, as well as on different PCs!), in both instances it's about 75% of the way through 8-(

What I find odd is that Bulkpaq orange has been fine for me so far (Pioneer 106D with Nero 6; Yamada DVX 6100 standalone) and these last two are have been burned from discs well into a stack of blanks that have produced perfect results every time until now 8-}

There is one way to get Bulkpaqs to work ok. This works out most of the time.

Reduce the overall disc size by 200-300MB. This means more compression though.

Also, write at a max of 2x / 2.4x.

Luckily, I still had the vobs and ifos for the most recent burn, so I burned it again, cunningly this time to a DVD-RW (Verbatim) at 2.4x and now it works fine.

I think I might burn it once more to a bulkpaq DVD-R at 2.4x, just to verify that the burn-speed is the crucial factor rather than the media.

Unfortunately, I don't have the vobs/ifos around for the other one that went dodgy, so I'll have to rip them off the DVD and reburn (to a DVD-RW) at a slower speed 8-).
