What to look for in a dvd burner

I'm going to buy a dvd burner soon, or get one at Christmas , what ever comes first.

What do I look for in a good dvd burner?
I'm not familiar with its jargon and such, so researching has been a bit strenuous. If I do get one, probably off ebay because things aren't as expensive, I don't want to get ripped off.

    Please help me.

Get one that is compatable with many types of blank disc's.

Research blank media on the net, and see which burner's are most common.

Try to stay with a major player-when you go off brand (cheaper) you lose ease of integration into your system.

Try Meritline, and Shop4Tech for blanks and compatability chart's.

You buying an external or internal ?

      external

Thanks for the help. Yeah, I've been researching this and it seems like the format part is important. I'm looking to get an External drive for my usb port. I think it should work.

Are you using an external yourself? What brand are you using? I'll do research on Meritline. As for blanks, memorex 4x looks cheapest on amazon.com, but I'll research on shop4tech as well.

Heard negative's about Memorex, but maybe they're ok for U.

I use a TDK 440N external (with firmware upgrade 1.0A).

Make sure you can connect whichever burner you get via USB2 or firewire to your computer.

Most popular blank's are DVD-R's (my opinion), and the write once only's are usually cheaper than RW's.

I've been spending under $100 for a 100 blank's, and cheapest reliable for me has been the Matrix DVD-R's at Shop 4Teck for about $60 per 100.

        Good Luck

If you have a couple of external burners in mind read what other people think of them over at: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters

Some websites offer cheap burners and you think "WOW! That's cheap! I think I'll get that one." Then come to find out it'll only burn DVD-RAM or only DVD+R and nothing else.

The NEC ND-2500A is an excellent burner and is the one that I just recently purchased. Newegg has it for $69. It burns everything but DVD-RAM and it'll also burn cd's. It has hundreds of positive reviews. Check it out.
