rip/burn chapters from different movies

I can't imagine this topic hasn't been covered many times, but I've searched the forum and most of the relevant posts were from 2002 (and weren't quite the same as my question), so I'm going to float this out there and hope I don't get flamed for being a noob (which, of course, I am) ...

I would like to rip certain favorite chapters from various movies and combine them onto one dvd that would play continuous from start to finish in a standalone DVD. I'd love to do just certain scenes, but I'm guessing that is far more complicated than my meager skills (and time) will permit. I have Shrink and Decrypter. Do-able?

Yes. Use Decrypter to rip all of the chapters that you want. Then use Shrink in ReAuthor mode and drag those chapters into your burn list. Then it will make an ISO that Decrypter can then burn.

Thanks TM ... that seems simple enough (even for me)... One other question then - I am assuming that some chapters may have the same name (number) ... can I just rename the file so that the numbers aren't the same? That brings to mind another question ... will Shrink put them in order of number from lowest to highest (and do I have to start with zero and be sequential)? If it does, and I can change the file names, I would be able to put them in any order I want by simply changing the number ... right?

Actually, I made a mistake. You would want to use SmartRipper so that you could select the chapters you want. It will give you the option of having the program seperate each chapter into its own VOB file. They would be numbered sequencially. You have the ability to rename them anything you want to. Just drag and drop them over into Shrink in whatever order you want and burn it.

Unfortunately, I'm back. Probably just a small issue, but I ran a test. Selected two chapters from a movie, used SR to rip them to HD. I ripped them in separate sessions to mimick using different movies. So far ... so good. They ripped just fine. Tried to pull them into Shrink using 'Open Files', then selecting the folder I had the two chapters in. Got the following error:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Failed to open file "C:\Test\VIDEO_TS.IFO" The system cannot find the file specified.

SR saved an IFO file for each chapter, but Shrink didn't see them for some reason. Here is what it saved for each chapter:

vts_08.d2v
vts_08.idx
vts_08.lst
vts_08_0 (this is the IFO file)
vts_08_1 (vob)
vts_08_INFO (this is a txt file)

It didn't create the usual VIDEO_TS folder, it just saved them to my Test folder as shown. It tagged the first one with vts_08 so I tagged the second one with vts_09. It created the same files for this chapter as shown above for 08.

To open your files using DVD Shrink, rip using DVD Decrypter using this guide: http://www.dvdshrink.info/dvd-decrypter.php

DVD Shrink needs a full structure to open files, if you rip certain files it in most cases will not be able to open them.

To go back to your original post where you ask to rip fav' chapters and certain scenes just click Re-author in DVD Shrink and use the set Start/End Frames feature to choose what segments you would like and click backup.

Thanks Mig$y! So, if I understand correctly, I shouldn't use SmartRipper, I should use DVD Decrypter instead? I'm not sure what you mean by a 'full file structure' that Shrink needs to open the files, but I'm assuming that means I can't just select certain chapters individually and that there are certain files it puts on the disc that only go on there when you rip the whole movie (or what it perceives to be the whole movie). I think you're telling me that I should rip the entire DVD with Decrypter, then 'squeeze' the file using Shrink start/end. That makes sense to me, in fact that seems like it would give me even more control of what part of the movie I keep as opposed to being limited to chapter starts and stops. My question would then be how I would join all these pieces (from different movies) onto one disk and have it play from start to finish.

Wouldn't Shrink see all these files as separate movies?

Would it burn them all to one disk?

Would they all play consecutively (and if they do how would I determine the order of play - or can't I?)

How do I justify all the time this will take to my wife (in fact, unless you can answer this one you might as well just skip the others )

I didn't realize that Shrink needs a full disc structure in order to open. I thought you could drag and drop files into it like Nero. My bad.

I am kickin' butt and takin' names! Powered by Mig$y (and thanks for the help from The Maynard)! Followed Mig$y's steps (and link) and it's working like a champ. Great stuff! I LOVE the fact that I'm not limited to chapters (using Shrinks start/end feature). Now ... if I could only get the scenes to fade to black at the transition ... HA!

This method would also allow me to edit out inappropriate scenes from otherwise appropriate movies for the young'ns (or would Hollywood come banging on my door?)
