Is it possible to re-position subtitles?

I like watching movies with subtitles on so that I catch dialogue that I might otherwise miss. However, there is one attribute about them that irks me:

Given that most DVD's are widescreen, and most people are viewing them on 4:3 aspect ratio screens; it would make sense that the subtitles should spend most of their time in the black borders, and not over the film itself.

I know this is possible, as a few of them do this, thereby turning that black border into a useful space by allowing subtitle viewing without interfering with the actual movie. For some reason though, this is not the case 90-95% of the time.

So what I'm wondering is if there's any way to move those subtitles down into the depths of the black border where they belong?

I do this using DVD2SVCD (DVD2DVD). You can get the info @Doom. The process strips off the subs and you can change the font, color palette, and locationon the output. There may be other ways but this one works for me.

      Thank you very much...

I wasn't able to find much info over @ Doom9, but after tinkering with the settings on DVD2SVCD, the sample output looks like it should come out properly.

However, it's been encoding w/ TMPGEnc for 8hrs, with still 4hrs left and who knows how many steps it still has after the encode...

Then I assume I'll have to do some re-authoring with DVDRemake in order to get the menus & extras back on? It's probably a lot more trouble than it's worth, but I'm going to keep going just to see if I can make it work.

      Thanks for your help!

EDIT: Please feel free to tell me if I have done something wrong, and that only altering subtitles shouldn't require re-encoding, because this seems plausible and would be a big relief
