Need To Know How To Burn Dvds

Can anyone help me.This may be a stupid question but I am knew to all this.I have a laptop and I just purchased an external dvd burner.I need to know the basic details on how to burn dvds.I see from reading various posts that I need to get a dvd decrypter of some sort.Can somebody please tell me the basic steps involved in successfully burning dvds.Your help would be much appreciated.
