    memorex 8x dvd+r problems at 8x'x

I just wanted to provide my experience with the memorex dvd+r dvd's and my lite on 1633s with BSOC firmware. Almost every movie I copied onto these dvd's at 8x's would freeze towards the latter scenes when played on my philips dvd727 standalone dvd player. Too bad I didn't test the dvd's I made first, because I had to throw out a lot of dvd's by the time I realized what was going on.

In any case, I tried burning the movies at 4x's, instead of the rated speed of 8x's, and the same movies played fine on the philips. The disks are made by CMC Magnetics Corp. acording to the utility I am using to analyze disks.

Since I only recently got the burner and only have memorex 8x's dvd's, I cannot say with any certainty whether the problem is with the disks or the writer. I can say that all the movies I have burnt onto my HP dvd+rw 4x's disks at there rated speed of 4x's have also turned out fine.

I hope this is helpful, and if you have any insights, please provide them.

    Thanks

Thanks for the heads up. I just downloaded and installed it. I will try burning again at 8x's when I get over being shell shocked by the loss of so many dvd's.

Could also be that your stand alone players don't like burned discs. Do they play well in your PC?

They play fine on the standalone if they are burned at 4x's. They freeze if they are burned at 8x's.

            Even with the latest firmware?

I have used the 4x Memorex DVD+R media, and they have worked well. I just stepped up to the 8x (same price, so why not?), and have onloy had a few problems with burning them using the Nero DVD-to-DVD copy feature (backup of a backup).

I have yet to watch one of the 8x DVDs all the way through. Made it about 30 minutes and stopped. I will go do so now.

Can you tell me if is a duration related thing? i.e. heat, or just specifically the end of the DVD?

-I have noticed very long delays in writing the "lead out" portion of the DVD.

I will post back if I find any problems with the media playing in my Samsung N501 player. I have been able to view the 4x media with no problems at all (and this is a picky player... doesn't like -Rs at all).

It has nothing to do with heat. I am testing them by jumping ahead to the later chapters, not waiting for them to play through. It was by waiting for them to play through that I originally discovered the problem.

I tried one disk at 8x's using the new firmware, and it seems to be ok. I will try some more and report back. One does not make for a conclusion.

As far as pc setup goes, I am fairly confident that is not the issue. I have been building cutting edge gaming and multimedia computers for four years now, and I am pretty capable when it comes to getting things to work optimally.

I didn't mean your skill at it. I'm not that much of a dick. I just used "PC" to encompass the usual error, to include software updates for NERO and firware updates for the DVD burner. Seems like the firmware has you on the right path.

After seeing you post I tried another 8x Memorex and skipped to the end. No problems, and it was Gladiator, which is pretty graphically intense at the end.

                    Happy Shrinking.

Thanks for the info. I tried another one at 8x's and it seems to have come out ok. By the way, haven't seen gladiator in a long time, so in that I am on a movie pass at Blockbuster this month, I think I will go grab a copy.

I wil keep you all updated if I run into a problem.

Maybe Memorex should have tried a little harder at these 8x DVDs. I've had 4 out of about 20 fail so far. With the 4x, I only had one fail, in a stack of 50.

I even found a group of 4 that are missing some of the white "printable" top coat. Like somone too a paper towel and windex and just wiped a spot off. -each of those failed.

Small price to pay for the 1/2 burn time. After all, time is money.

As far as I am concerned 4 out of 20 is an unacceptably high failure rate. I hear people successfully burning 100% of Ritek DVD's. I should not have to worry and go through a testing process every time I burn a dvd. That headache plus the time wasted burning the bad disks plus the cost of the disks lost is too high a price to pay. I will stop using Memorex and go with Ritek for the time being.

                            Scratch what I said before.

I'm with PDJ on this one.

In the last 7 minutes of the backup, I had 8 pauses. for lesser players, this translates in to many more pauses and an eventual lockup of the player.

With the 4x I had ZERO failure!

With this 8x, I have 1 out of ~8 fail, and pretty much all of those will "hicup" towards the end. I had faith in Memerox after my first encounter... and I bought their 100 pack.

                            DAMN YOU MEMOREX

Don't panic. You have a LiteOn burner - create your own firmware with this tool - OmniPatcher:
