    Various DVD Copying Questions

Hi I've just purchased an NEC 3500AG DVD Burner and am still getting to grips with the process of copying/burning DVDs. I have Nero 6.3.1.6 as well as DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. The questions I have and hope people can help me with are:

    1. How do you know when a DVD is DVD5 (single layer) or DVD9 (dual layer) when you insert it in the drive?

    2. Can backups of DVDs (i.e. movies) be made region-free and PAL/NTSC readable if for example the original is region 2 PAL? How would you go about this?

    3. What is the most recommended order of backing up a DVD? E.g . order of use of DVD Decrytor/DVD Shrink/Nero etc...

    Thanks for your time.

    1) Use Windows to "see" the total filesize of the DVD. A DVD5 will be a maximum of 4+Gb, a DVD9 uo to 9+Gb

    2) Region-free, yes (easily). PAL/NTSC is NOT an easy deal

    3) Only use DVD Decrypter in those instances that DVD Shrink cannot rip the DVD. Then you can AUTOMATICALLY go from DVD Shrink to NERO...

      1. If you are using DVD Shrink, after you insert the DVD, DVD Shrink will do a quick analysis of the movie, and if the compression bar is all Grey, and there is no compression used on it, it is a DVD-5 Ex:

      - If you are using DVD Decrypter, click "Mode", then "ISO", then "Read R". Then on the left hand side to the right it will say "Number of Layers".

      Ex:

      2. I am not sure about this, as I have never done it, ill let someone else answer it.

      3. I use DVD Shrink for both decrypting and encoding then follow up with Nero Burning ROM to burn.

So does anyone have an idea about PAL/NTSC compatibility/conversion?
