    Reading burned files

    Hi,

I'm new to this forum and have picked up some great help from the guides thanks for your hard work.

I'm having a problem reading burned files. If I make a backup of a dvd I can play it in my dvd player no problem so i'm sure the burner is working. However I cant read the files from the dvd-r from either my dvd-rom or writer. The same happens if I make a data dvd disk with nero. The dvd-rom just spins and the burner drive pretends to be empty. Also if I convert my camcorder avi filed to play on a dvd I cant read these either thought they will play in my dvd player.

I have tried burning on low speeds and I have tried using different dvd-r media.

Edit=> Also, I cant play my back-ups on my PC.

Has anyone got any ideas. They would be much apreciated.

    Thanks

I'm having probs with burned files too...

I bought a used DVD. It was not working and I backed it up right away with DVDXcopy Platinum's DVDXRescue. Glad I did, as the repair effort worked and I can no longer read the original. I decided to back up the copied DVD files onto my HDD for redundancy. I have tried everything known to man to copy the files off the burned DVD to my HDD. Everything fails, including DVDXcopy, DVDXRescue, DVDDecrypter, DOS copy commands, RecordNow, Windows cut 'n paste attempts - everything fails with CRC read errors.

Now. The disk plays fine in stand-alone set-top DVD player and on several computers' DVD drives. No one can tell me why my computer's DVD drive will play the movie PERFECTLY but fail when copying (with ABSOLUTE predictability) at the same Logical Block Address time after time after time.

My guess is that a lost bit or byte here & there is nothing when playing a movie and that, consequently, DVD players are quite forgiving. However, what if I back up my 2.5 gig mission critical database to DVD media? 1 bit lost out of a 20-billion bit file renders the whole damned thing useless. Are DVD writables that imperfect?

      Hi Mlh

      Thanks for getting back

Since posting I have found-out a few things.

      1. My Dvd-rom can't read anything burned above 2x.
      2. My Dvd-burner will read data and video files from a cd-r

To over come some of my problems, when I transcode an avi file with nero, I then use Dvd Shrink to make an iso image and burn the image with DvdDecrypter at 2x. The result is, I can now read and copy dvd's I have burned. However, I cant read dvd data disks decause nero won't let me burn any lower than 4x. I can live with the fact that my burner wont read from a burned dvd as long as my dvd-rom will read them. Basically, a new dvd-rom will make things workable, though a little messy, but I can live with that.
