    Bad media?

    (Media Info at bottom)
I've backed over 250 dvds with very few problems using Sony 8x 50pks from Compusa. Ran out of those and started using TDK 8x 25pk from Circuit city - burned 50 with no problem, used two of the Sony 8x I found leftover and NOW have just now started getting failed burns with TDK's.

BUT ONLY after I burned the two Sony blanks I had laying around. Really odd - after failing on 4 consecutive TDk's , I successfully burned a Sony immediately thereafter. But it makes no sense as I burned 50 with no problem.

Anybody have any ideas before I try to return what TDK's I have left? I tried those links that many reference about dvd writers and media, but they look to be absolute crap. All it really is, is any old yahoo recommending whatever has worked for them and didn't find very many recommendations at all for my Sony 710a.

I know many of you will say just go back to what worked, but I can't find any sales so the Sony's are more than 2x more expensive now.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    1) Burn them at no greater than 2X

    2) You might try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on your burner. Maxell makes one that retails for approximately $10US...

Your installed firmware is rather old - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1917

Thanks for your reply. Any idea why 8x has worked fine for 50 of them, but now they are failing consistently? Also, I don't know if Nero even gives me a 2x option, only 8,6, and 4.

Good idea on the cleaner - that might help.

Also - does this media look to be okay?
            Memorex at CompUSA

I'll certainly give the updated firmware a try, but it's burned great on BY02 for a while now.

It seems this problem only developed AFTER burning a couple of the Sony 8x.

But thank you for all of your input and I will give them all a try!

You'd be hardpressed to find any positive remarks about Memorex DVD media anywhere in these forums...

Now, by this do you mean that you have had problems with TDK media or just your 710a burner?

Ah - thanks for the tip. I was asking based on this comment about memorex and you posted below but didn't rip on him for recommending Memorex

Agh! Naughty Ormonde - hiding Memorex behind Ritek!

I can't overemphasize the importance of a regular clean with a lens cleaner: This week I've resurrected two drives which were not responding to a lens cleaning disc .. by taking the tops off and cleaning the lenses manually!
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!

my prob was not with the 8x media, it was burning at 8x, i dropped to 4x with the 710a and all is well, it only takes a hair longer anyhow

Actually I only ever use Memorex (-RW) for testing purposes anyway. I guess I'll have to accept being naughty...

I am curious to know how the media wasn't the problem yet, you clearly state that dropping the burning speed to 4X with the same 8X rated media fixed your problem?

Being naughty is one of my favorite past times. With the opposite sex of course.

                            Thanks again for everyone's replies!

I will def have to give this lens cleaning a run for. I don't doubt that burning over 250 dvds in just a couple months has probably had some effect on my lens.

Someone here suggested a maxell brand - any other ideas?(though some of you are from across the pond, might not be the same here.)

Also - you mentioned manually cleaning the lens. Any tutorials on this - I built my own computer so I'm not a complete noob, but it would be helpful to know the best way to go about this.

                            Thanks!
