i have a benq dw 1620, when i try to burn anything it doesnt let me, it cant read my blank media, i have 4x dvd-r's and 2x dvd+r and i cant burn anything on them.
Benq's are the mercedez benz of burners, however they don't run on low octane gas well(bad media). They are picky.
The 1640 seems to run well on anything, it gives CD/DVD Speed quality scores of 95-97 with really crappy media like Daxon or CMC-MAG, check out the media archives on CD Freak's Benq forum:-
spent a lot of time there, nec and hardware, registered sept 2004
No I'll go with Dee on the Nec as being less picky, Benq are better scanners
than burners, LG's the better burner, Nec best overall.
I have all of them. no pioneer or plex anymore
I think the NEC also has the edge for CD burning if I remember correctly.
When my main burner was an NEC 2510 I remember being jealous of the way official BenQ firmware upgrades were very frequent and actually improved matters, whilst I had to rely on the skills of gurus like Liggy for even simple things like wider media support.
Another sobering thing is the price of kit these days, you can buy a 1640 and a 4550 for what I paid for my 2510 back then. If you really want to cringe, my first Panasonic DVD-RAM drive cost £2000, and the disks (1Gb), were £30 a pop.
according to dee , the nec's are more robust, tweakable and compatible
with more medias, she scans with a benq 1620, as I do. Of course she likes to fix firmwares.
