Freecom DVD+/-RW external USB

Hello all!
I need some help if I may. I have a Freecom DVD+/-RW External USB and all I want to do is throw it at a wall.
The Problem is that sometimes it recognises blank DVD's and then sometimes it doesnt. Ive tried DVD+R DVD-R... it seems to choose when it wants to recognise them.
Im running XP Pro SP2, but I had this trouble on XP Home without any service pack. I emailed Freecom months ago but still no reply. Has anyone got any advice? Maybe I'm using cheap disks (50p each).

try cleaning the lens (lens cleaning kit)

I also have an external Freecom as one of my writers, I can't say I use it very often anymore and you are right, Freecom are terrible at responding.

Are you running the latest firmware? If not get the latest (official) f/w from: http://www.freecom.com/firmware.asp

50p per disc isn't all that cheap!
